Repeatedly! Mostly hand-finished but they're also sealed, primed and UV ink printed too:

We start with a wet finish sand of all unassembled pieces, then we use a spray shellac sealer to cover knots and blemishes. Learn more about Knots & Blemishes here.

Then we carefully apply an outdoor-grade primer to all sides & faces.

Next, depending on the model, we finish all of the edges with the appropriate outdoor-grade trim colour.

Then, the whole unassembled chair is off to the printer to apply the main pattern with, again, outdoor-grade UV-LED inks. This is the most expensive and delicate step in the process, and one we continue to refine.

Once printed, the individual chair pieces are inspected for flaws, and then a second coat of the trim colour is applied, which covers any overspray from the UV printing.

Some chairs then receive an initial topcoat spray prior to assembly, while others receive their first topcoat after assembly. We're tracking how well each cohort performs in real-world, real-weather conditions.

All chairs receive at least one, and often 2 more topcoats to deliver a weather-resistant finish that has the best chance of surviving in a punishing outdoor climate. 

But don't expect miracles! Despite all of our treatments, wood is wood and will to some extent, always react to its environment. That means rain, humidity, sun and hot/cold/freeze/thaw weather cycles will, over time, take their toll on wood.

Every piece is finished with a high-quality, outdoor topcoat finish to resist nature’s weathering effect.

Even so, this is a wood product and no matter the finish, all wood items react to their environment, and those that are repeatedly exposed to outdoor weather will change over time as a result. 

To preserve your furniture's finish for as long as possible:

• Store indoors or well-covered during winter / inclement periods.
  
• Have a simple, handy cover you can quickly deploy if bad weather threatens.
  
• At the start of every season, you may wish to spray coat or otherwise apply a protective finish designed for outdoor applications.
  

Knots & other blemishes are something we try to minimize or eliminate. While we seal in all visible knots prior to priming, it's not a perfect process - some of the knots continue to bleed through to the surface, sometimes over many months. It looks like this:

The good news is it's purely cosmetic and won't affect your enjoyment of the chair. It's also really only visible on the lighter-coloured chairs.

You don't need to rush to cover it every time it rains, but prolonged exposure to moisture can accelerate the degradation of the finish and the wood.

With most outdoor furniture and fixtures, you can expect the surfaces that are vertical (i.e. perpendicular to the ground) to age most favourably because gravity forces them to shed water naturally.

On the other hand, flat surfaces or anywhere else water will pool before evaporating are more likely to suffer the affects of repeated exposure to weather extremes.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing! 

Long before we started designing this line of furniture, our years of gardening, landscaping and design projects made abundantly clear to us that the "earned patina" of wooden furniture that's been left exposed to the elements often, counterintuitively, is perceived as preferable to its original pristine finish - it just seems to more naturally suit its environment. 

The outdoor-grade primers, paints, UV-LED inks and topcoats provide each chair with its best shot at surviving punishing outdoor climates.

Within Toronto & 905 area we deliver fully-assembled pieces. Beyond that area, shipping costs & carrier regulations currently require us to ship partially-assembled units, so you'll need to do a bit of assembly.

But don't worry - it's only 6 screws and we've made it impossible to mess up!

Returns 
Our policy lasts 30 days. If 30 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.

To be eligible for a return / exchange, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, and must exhibit a serious defect or have sustained damage in shipping. 

There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable): 

• Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. 
  
• Any item that is returned more than 30 days after delivery
• Knots & Blemishes do not qualify for exchange or refund. 

Refunds (if applicable) 
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. 
If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within a certain amount of days.

Sale items (if applicable) 
Only regular priced items may be refunded, unfortunately sale items cannot be refunded.

Exchanges (if applicable) 
We only replace items if they are defective or damaged in shipping. If you need to exchange it for the same item, please Contact Us and we'll will provide return shipping instructions.

You will be responsible for paying for your own shipping costs for returning your item. Shipping costs are non-refundable. If you receive a refund, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary.

If you are shipping an item over $75, you should consider using a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance. We don’t guarantee that we will receive your returned item.
